We all know onions to be an essential ingredient in many of our daily meals, but did you know that they are also packed with many health benefits?

First and foremost, onions are rich in antioxidants which help fight inflammation and boost immunity. They also contain flavonoids and sulfur compounds that have been linked to reduced risk of cancer and heart disease.

If you have trouble sleeping at night, try having some onion soup for dinner. Onions contain a sleep-promoting hormone called melatonin that helps regulate our sleep cycles.

Onions are also great for our digestive system. They are high in fiber which helps regulate bowel movements and prevent constipation. They also contain prebiotics which feed the good bacteria in our gut, leading to a healthier digestive system.

When it comes to cooking with onions, it can be quite intimidating for many of us. Here are some tips to make the process easier:

  • Use a sharp knife to minimize your chances of accidentally cutting yourself.
  • Peel the onion and cut off the root and stem. Cut the onion in half from the top to the bottom, and then make horizontal cuts from one end to the other. Finally, make vertical cuts to finish dicing the onion.
  • If you find yourself tearing up while cutting onions, place the onion in the freezer for ten minutes before cutting. This will help reduce the tear-inducing gas that onions release when cut.

Here is a simple recipe to get you started with cooking onions:

French Onion Soup Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 teaspoons flour
  • 4 cups beef broth

  • 1/2 cup grated Gruyere cheese
  • 4 slices French bread

  2. Add onions to the pan and cook until softened, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add flour to the pan and stir until all onions are coated.
  4. Add beef broth, wine, salt and black pepper to the pan and bring to boil.
  5. Once boiling, reduce heat to low and let simmer for 20 minutes.
  6. While the soup simmers, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. On a baking sheet, place slices of French bread and sprinkle with grated Gruyere cheese.
  8. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes until cheese is melted and bread is slightly toasted.
  9. Spoon soup into bowls and place the cheesy French bread on top of each bowl.
